Okay, so I got Radiant Historia about 4 days ago, I am... eight and a half hours in (literally, my time is 8:30), I'm on Chapter 3, and my opinion is the following:
Radiant Historia is a good game. This might be a small bias on my part because I expected it to be good.
The game's gimmick is the ability to travel through time and parallel histories. That being said, the game's story is pretty good. It involves two opposing sides that are fighting for fertile land, because the land is in a process of desertification, which means that the fertile land is being lost. Naturally, as I said before; two sides are at war, and your character is either a soldier or a member of a group that specializes in espionage and the like. Political intrigue, moral dilemmas, etcetera , etcetera.
The characterization is great. Everyone has their own little quirks and backstories. For instance, there's Kiel, my favorite character. He is an energetic, but loyal new recruit in the army that has been wanting to join the army for a very long time. He knows some ritual sword dancing and is the unofficial leader of the new recruits. He dies and it sucked, but because time travel is a gimmick, he might return at some point later. I hope he does, because as I mentioned earlier, he's my favorite character and oops I am rambling.
The level design is pretty good. The music is by Yoko Shimomura (Super Mario RPG, Kingdom Hearts) and as you'd expect; it is really good.
The gameplay is mostly standard JRPG fare. The things to talk about are the battle system and maybe the time travel thing. Battles take place on a 3x3 grid, like the one below.
[-][ ][+] [+][ ][-]
[-][ ][+] [+][ ][-]
[-][ ][+] [+][ ][-]
As the image shows, things in the back (-) take less damage and deal less damage. Things in the front (+) do more damage and take more damage. Things in the middle ( ) as you might guess, do average damage and take average damage. Enemies can be moved all around the map; up, down, left, right, A, start: select level. Also, on the top screen, it shows a turn order, which you can change. For instance; if you are planning an attack between your characters, but one of them is a few turns below, you can switch with the enemy and then the enemy goes, but you can then do a super attack of sorts with your characters (and believe me, it has saved me on a few occasions so far)
and it works really well.
So the scores are:
Story:8/10
Music:9/10
Characters:10/10
Gameplay:8/10
Gimmick:9/10
Overall:8.8/10
Difficulty:Medium-Hard
If you like JRPGs, then play this. If you don't like JRPGs, but want to try one; wait for Pokemon Black and White. It comes out in 6 days or something, and it's pretty easy.
